Biliary drainage

Biliary drainage describes a category of minimally invasive procedures that are performed by a trained interventional radiologist to treat blockages, narrowing, and/or injury of bile ducts. Most often these problems are a result of gallstones; however, other things like inflammation, infection, or tumors can also be responsible. By temporarily placing a small plastic catheter into the gallbladder or bile ducts and attaching the catheter to an external drainage bag, this permits the drainage of bile subsequently decreases inflammation and pain. Sometimes, stents may be placed to keep the bile ducts opened if they are blocked.
