Cholecystostomy

Cholecystostomy is the placement of a small tube into the gallbladder to permit the drainage of bile. This is done to treat inflammation or infection of the gallbladder that usually occurs when bile drainage from the gallbladder becomes blocked, often from a gallstone. This is known as “cholecystitis” and the condition can result in symptoms such as pain, nausea, and vomiting. Cholecystostomy placement is a minimally invasive alternative to surgery in patients that are too ill to undergo an operation.
