Inferior vena cava filter

Patients who have a clot in the deep leg veins (DVT) and cannot receive anticoagulant medication or “blood thinners” due to bleeding risk may benefit from an IVC filter. This device is placed within the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from traveling to the lungs, known as pulmonary embolism, which can be life threatening. The device resembles a tiny metal basket and is inserted into the vein through a small catheter using image guidance. These devices can be life saving and can often be safely removed at a later time if they are no longer needed.
