Ovarian vein embolization
Ovarian vein embolization serves as an effective treatment for women who have pelvic pain, aching, or heaviness related to pelvic congestion syndrome - a problem that occurs as a result of varicose veins within the pelvis. By placing a small catheter into the problematic vein and placing special coils to block the problematic vein this helps alleviate symptoms in most patients (97% success rate).
Pelvic congestion syndrome is a painful condition in females caused by varicose veins in the pelvis. Symptoms include chronic pelvic pain, aching, or heaviness that may persist for several months. Symptoms often first start during or after a pregnancy. Ovarian vein embolization is performed by an interventional radiologist, who will insert a small catheter through a tiny pinhole incision. Using image guidance, the catheter is placed in the problematic veins which are closed off to prevent them from causing the symptoms. The procedure is done as an outpatient so you can go home the same day the treatment is done.
