Paracentesis

Fluid accumulation inside the abdominal cavity (ascites) can be due to many reasons including liver or heart conditions. The fluid is removed by paracentesis. The skin is numbed and a thin catheter is inserted into the fluid using a small needle. The fluid is then drained and may be sent to the lab for testing. Paracentesis can often alleviate symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, or lack of appetite and can be done regularly if needed.
