Port placement
Port placement is an excellent option for patients who require long term and reliable IV access for medicines like chemotherapy or frequent lab draws. The port is inserted using ultrasound and x-ray video guidance and is placed underneath the skin, typically in the upper chest. It can be used immediately once placed. A port is superior to other forms of IV access such as a PICC line because a port is completely underneath the skin and thus carries a lower infection risk - you can also shower with a port. When the port is no longer needed it can be easily removed by the interventional radiology provider.
