Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a therapy that delivers targeted chemotherapy and synthetic materials called “embolic agents” to liver tumors. The interventional radiologist introduces a small catheter through the artery in the leg and uses imaging to navigate into the blood vessels supplying the tumor. The chemotherapy and embolic agent are then injected directly into the tumor. The embolic agents work to occlude the blood supply to the tumor and trap the chemotherapy drug in the tumor. This may be a standalone treatment or used with other therapies like radiation, ablation, or surgery in certain cases.
