Thoracentesis

Accumulation of fluid in the space around the lung (pleural effusion) can lead to symptoms like shortness of breath. Removing this fluid (thoracentesis) can alleviate these symptoms. The fluid can accumulate from various causes like infection or heart failure. Removing the fluid for diagnostic laboratory tests can help your provider determine the cause and possible treatments that may prevent the fluid from recurring.
