Y-90 (Radioembolization)
Y-90 is a form of targeted radiation therapy that treats advanced forms of liver cancer including hepatocelluar carcinoma or colorectal metastases. The interventional radiologist introduces a small catheter through the artery in the leg and uses imaging to navigate into the blood vessels supplying the liver tumors. Radioactive yttrium 90 beads are then administered directly into the tumor. This allows for targeted radiation delivery to the tumor while sparing healthy liver tissue and other parts of the body from radiation. While Y-90 is not curative, it often helps improve quality of life and may prolong the life of patients with liver cancer for months or years.
