Uterine fibroid embolization

Many women will develop symptomatic uterine fibroids by the time they turn 50 years old. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a simple and safe treatment option as an alternative to surgeries like myomectomy or hysterectomy, which have a longer recovery time. Since the uterus is preserved with UFE, this is a good treatment option for patients who want to maintain fertility. During the procedure the interventional radiologist will guide a small catheter into the uterine arteries supplying the fibroid(s) and inject embolic agents (tiny synthetic beads) to occlude the blood flow to the fibroid. This results in shrinkage of the fibroid(s) thereby relieving the uncomfortable symptoms.
